Seemingly endless red dust, water crossings, mud, giant potholes, termite mounds and the jarring bumps of travelling unsealed roads are just some of the challenges for our workers in the Top End.
Our members involved in Bible translation and Scripture Use know how important it is to build relationships in person, and so they prepare themselves for long hours on the road, and the odd kangaroo, emu or cattle that may appear en route.
They rely on four-wheel-drive vehicles, equipped with communications, water and other provisions to help with whatever they may encounter along the way.
Yet the cost of reaching such remote areas, where a day’s journey is counted in the hundreds of kilometres, quickly adds up. $25 buys enough diesel to travel 100km, not including operating costs such as vehicle maintenance and safety equipment.

Cooked chickens, coleslaw and a $20 power card are some of the essentials Scripture Use worker Rachel Borneman carries when heading to remote communities. The supplies are her way of thanking Kriol-speaking believers for their hospitality, kindly welcoming and hosting her overnight after hours of driving.
Rachel often travels to Aboriginal communities such as Beswick, a 224km round trip from her base in the Northern Territory town of Katherine. Most of the journey is on unsealed road, the red dirt and dust swirling in her wake a stark contrast to the alternately green and beige landscape.
Rachel’s visits encourage people living in community to dig deeper into the Bible, and help improve literacy skills so they have the capacity to do so independently. Being in community also leads to innovative and creative Scripture projects.
