LITERACY

Supporting Bible translation through literacy in the Solomon Islands.

Since 2008 Karen has been working with a wide variety of people from different churches and organisations around the country, training Solomon Islanders to teach youth and women to read and write in their own languages.

The curriculum Karen wrote has been translated into different local languages and is used in a growing number of islands. Karen is thrilled as she witnesses the huge change in women’s lives when they are able to read for themselves.

Through this Bible-based literacy training, Solomon Islanders are
empowered with the skills and passion to see their people changed through the gift of reading and by the power of God's Word.

As Karen is beginning to transition back to Australia, she has been asked to train up a whole local literacy organisation (with teachers and trainers in many islands all over the Solomons) in this Bible-based literacy curriculum before she leaves. The first training of these teachers and trainers begins in June 2017 and Karen will continue training and mentoring them until the end of 2018 when she will pass on the Bible-based literacy work to this local group.
