Beyond Basics, Mt Tamborine (SE Qld)
Epic Storytelling
Several times a year we conduct basic workshops in crafting, telling, teaching and studying God’s Word through the medium of story; but once every two years there is an extra opportunity to “go deeper” in the art of Biblical storytelling, looking at ideas and techniques that we don’t have time to cover in the introductory workshops. These opportunities are Beyond Basics, a weekend get-away with other Storytellers to share ideas, hear new input, and craft – or just listen to – a few more stories. This year Beyond Basics will be held at the beautiful and well-loved Mt Tamborine Conference Centre, on the last weekend of July.
Digging Deeper in Scripture’s Stories
The program will include sessions on a range of topics such as Getting the theology right, World view and Bible storytelling, Becoming a Sacred Storyteller, Bible Storytelling for Kids’ Ministry, Building Bridges to Storytelling Opportunities, Corporate storytelling, A Vision for Central Queensland and more. There will also be free time to enjoy a bush walk to one of the many waterfalls on Mt Tamborine, or a leisurely coffee on Gallery Walk with its numerous tourist shops; and a special program of Epic Storytelling (see below) is planned for the Saturday evening. If numbers warrant it we aim to provide special programs for primary and secondary school aged children – please let us know well in advance if you are interested in this option.
The $140 cost of the weekend includes all food from Friday dinner to Sunday lunch, plus morning and afternoon teas and suppers, as well as shared accommodation and the program elements and handouts. Oh yes, and there’s a $20 discount per person for those who register at least one month before the event. Where else could you get a fully catered weekend away in such a beautiful location for $120? But even so, if you would like to come but can’t afford it, please get in touch and we’ll see what we can do.
Click on one of the Register buttons above and please fill in all the details requested, and pay either the deposit ($20 per person) or the full fee, to secure your place. Full payment is due by Friday 20th July, but the earlybird discount closes on Tuesday 26th June. For any enquiries please contact Peter O’Loghlin by email or by phone on 07 3892 3348.

Explore Language in Brisbane
Sadly, but for obvious reasons, this course has had to be postponed. We are hoping to run it in November. Keep an eye on this page, or better still, subscribe at the foot of this page for updates and we’ll keep you posted.
This course introduces you to the linguistic foundations of cross-cultural mission work, and gives you the opportunity to assess your ability to communicate in another language and culture. Over the course of the week, you will get a hands-on experience of learning a new language by reflecting on its sounds and structures, and looking at the culture of those who speak it.
Subjects taught – at an introductory level – include principles of Bible translation and semantics, phonetics (the study of vocal sounds and their written representation), language awareness (grammar, or the ways in which different languages are structured), language learning (strategies for learning a new language, even if there are no written materials available for it), anthropology (or more specifically, the study of culture and worldview), and literacy. Ctrl-click here for a description of some of these subjects. The course is designed for those who wish to explore the possibility that God may be calling them to Bible translation or related fields, but has also proved valuable for those wishing to prepare for short or long term ministry in any field of Christian work in a cross-cultural context.
Venue: This is a live-in event; It will be held in a rural setting on a macadamia farm in the beautiful, rolling hills of Maleny, about an hour north of Brisbane and half an hour inland from the Sunshine Coast. Full details of how to get there and what to bring will be sent in early June to those registered.
Dates for 2020: TBA. Those who subscribe for updates below will receive an email when things become clearer.
Cost: $200 per person, including all food and accommodation, as well as tuition and printed notes. Registrations received by Thursday 28 May will attract a $20 discount. For catering reasons, the final deadline for registrations is Sunday 21 June. Non-refundable deposit is $20 per person; either the deposit or the full fee is required with registration to secure your place.
Explore Language is generally run annually in Brisbane, while a more in-depth six-week version called Launch is held each January-February in Melbourne. Information about the Melbourne course can be found here.
